Police Union rips moves to tighten reins on cops - Changes 'going to drive morale into toilet

The FOB is in distress over recent requests for police officers to give samples of their DNA at crime scenes and put GPS tracking devices in their squad cars. Ofiicers are said to not want to be tracked and think that it is unnecessary to give their DNA. Ofiicials, however, feel that this move will boost public safety and be a move for the better.

I think the book is started off with Roll Call in order for the reader to understand the purpose of the book. It is a very personal work for Smith because most of his family was in the force. It helps to give a view point to the book that you wouldn't have if you didn't know this about his family history. Not only do you sense his respect and care for the officers and what they go through, but without it, it would just seem like a composition of facts and histories of the Chicago police force. Knowing his history with it gives you a base to start from and a different way to see them.

I found the history behind the gang violence in Chicago to be very helpful to understand Kumiega's point of view. As someone who knows very little about Chicago's history, it was hard to see it all from an officers viewpoint. Seeing the way he spoke about gangs and his patrolling was something that was new to me. Yet, without the history of the gang violence I probably wouldn't have seen it as seriously as I do now. Its serious business and Kumiega explains it well but it makes more of an impact by adding in the history the city went through with gang violence.

I think Smith Starts with Officer Sreng's story because it is much more relatable. His reaction and experience seems to be very much like how I would act in the situation. It showed a side of police officers that is sensitive and very affected. I think we sometimes see them as large authority figures and not like everyday people. Spreng gave a viewpoint that showed the power but also had the affected side as well. He was dimensional and natural so the story made sense to the reader. it was a nice way to start off because it wasn't too harsh and it was a good segue into stories from police officers.
